Rollmaster
and Romac are fast becoming household names for products
that fit first time, work exceptionally well, and gives the installer a
better return on investment without claims. Products that sell
themselves.
Red Label Premium and Extra Premium Timing Sets:
All Red Label timing sets are produced using billet steel for both the
crank and camshaft sprockets. The grades of materials used are
mentioned further down this page. Premier sets are nitride hardened and
include a one-piece Torrington and Iwis chain.
Red label sets come with 7 or 9 crankshaft keyway sprockets depending
on crankshaft diameter. The smaller shafts tend to be best suited to 7
crank keyways, although engines like Small Block Chevs etc come with 9
so it allows more adjustment for dialing in the cam. Crankshaft
sprocket keyways are in 2 degree increments always unless otherwise
noted. The relationship from crank keyway to camshaft sprocket timing
is 2:1 meaning that the amount of advance or retard at the camshaft is
in one degree increments, IE 1, 2, 3 or 4 degrees. Multiple keyways are
a solid fixture and do not tend to move or work lose like offset
dowels, thus providing a positive locking of the cam timing to what
ever position is desired.
Rollmaster timing sets are light weight and stronger than any other
timing set available due to the weight savings of billet steel and CNC
machinery. No additional machining is required to fit these sets or the
need for offset bushings or drilling of cam gears.
All Red Label timing sets come standard with Rollmasterʼs own premium
grade Iwis full roller timing chain. Every small and big block Chev
comes standard with a brass thrust washer and is available with an
optional one-piece Torrington thrust bearing. You will find Rollmaster
has included brass thrust washers to most of our range including Ford
for increased performance and reliability.
Where possible our one-piece Torrington thrust bearings can be applied
to most of our range of timing sets and listings are noted accordingly
in our catalogue.
Notice our Nitrated harder timing sets and those fitted with
Torringtonʼs, compared to the standard billet steel sets. There is a
very comprehensive range of Premium and Premier sets including Tunnel
Bored sets listed here.
Tunnel Bored Sets:
The undersize required is added to the part number Example: CS1000-.010
is ten thousands under size for a Chev SB where the engine has been
Line Bored and the standard set fits loosely. The sprockets are
actually made larger similar to engine bearings, but within a limit
though. Line Bored or Tunnel Bored sets play a very large part with our
offering over the competitions ability to rectify this problem.

Vernier Adjustable Timing Chain Sets:
Vernier timing sets are an upgrade on our premium timing sets. Because
the cam sprocket is produced in two parts it allows the outer sprocket
section to move separately and independently to the inner hub by way of
elongated slots, allowing infinite adjustment to cam timing just by
positioning the camshaft to the required degrees then locking the
socket head screws around the perimeter which clamps the entire unit
together as one solid cam sprocket. Vernier sprockets tend to be a
little heavier than our standard
Red Label sets as more material is used to aid in the threaded section
needed for the inner hub. All vernier sets use our regular crank
sprockets with single crank keyway only, but all have nitrated sprocket
teeth on both cam and crank. Torrington one-piece thrust bearings are
used exclusively on all vernier sets where applicable, otherwise brass
thrust washers are fitted. Iwis chain is used exclusively on all
vernier sets. Installation is a breeze with vernier sets as the entire
set can be installed in just the same manner as any other timing set.
By leaving the locking screws on the cam wheel loose you can move the
camshaft independently to
the crankshaft and timing set without moving anything else. You just
dial in your camshaft using the vernier scale and then tighten it all
up.
Blue Label Timing Sets:
These are an economy-based timing set using Rolon full roller timing
chain and single keyway crank sprockets. They are exactly
the same sprockets and materials as used in my Premium sets but without
the frills. These offer an entirely different approach to
the market share including the engine reconditioning sector or budget
minded customers. Blue Label sets come with a brass shim
only if applicable to that set, no Torringtonʼs or heat treatment is
applied to these sets.
Materials used for All Timing Sets:
Crank Sprockets: K1045 Billet steel bar unless nominated otherwise.
Cam Sprockets: K1045 Billet steel bar. Nitrated sets are each listed
with independent part numbers.
Timing Chains: (Iwis and Rolon)
Rollmaster fits Rolon chain to all Blue Label timing sets regardless.
Our Red Label timing sets and Vernier timing sets are fitted
exclusively with Rollmaster/Iwis quality German timing chain. All
chains are 3/8” pitch British Standard 1⁄4” full roller Single and
Double Row chains. Iwis chain is not made in varying pitch lengths to
accommodate line bore engines.
Harmonic Balancers:
All Romac Harmonic Balancers are SFI 18.1 spec approved. These are
offered in four styles. All 360 degreed and fully encapsulated outer
rings via a shoulder at the rear and a serviceable circlip mounted at
the front of the outer ring. All Romac Balancers are Individually
Consecutively Marked, fully serviceable and need no special bonding
with the elastomer. Balancers can be ordered with undersize bores to
suit Scat and Eagle crank snouts; simply indicate this by adding the
undersize to the P/N when ordering. To be sure of the bore size you
need you should measure this prior to purchasing. A list is provided in
our catalogue for standard factory bore diameters.
1. Sports Series: Steel Inner
Hub / Steel Outer Ring, for Mild Street, Strip performance engines that
offers increased harmonic absorption over stock units. 360 degreed
outer rings. Similar weight to factory cast units but with the safety
of an encapsulated outer ring. RPM range 8500. Available in External or
Neutral balance. Weight from 3 to 5kgʼs
2. Performance Series: Steel
Inner Hub / Alloy Outer Ring, for very Hi Performance Street, Marine or
Race engines requiring the added insurance of a Steel Inner Hub for
strength where dry sump pumps etc may be installed. Romac recommend
this style of balancer over all other balancers we produce due to its
flexibility and endurance characteristics. Weight savings of
approximately 1/3 less can be achieved with this style of balancer over
our steel units and factory units. Available in External or Neutral
balance. RPM range 10,000. Weight from 1.8 to 3.5kgʼs
3. Pro Series: Alloy Inner
Hub / Alloy Outer Ring, for Marine or all out Drag Racing or Circuit
Racing etc where nothing is required to be run from the inner hub or
outer ring especially dry sump pumps. Extreme weight savings as little
as 1kg total balancer weight is possible. These balancers are
particularly important to tight cornered tracks where engine revs are
low and instant revs are required to accelerate out of tight turns.
Neutral Balance Only. RPM range 10,000. Most alloy balancers come with
a larger seal boss diameter and seal supplied if applicable.
4. Blown or Supercharged Balancers.
4340 grade Steel Inner Hub / Alloy Outer Ring, for Street, Strip or
Marine applications with dual keyways. STD 3/16” and 1⁄4” 180 degrees
opposite. Larger seal area with special seal included in the package.
Available in External or Neutral Balance configurations. Weight saving
applicable to our Steel/Alloy units. Front inner hub face can be
Standard Factory layout or Chrysler 6 Bolt pattern with a 2” inch
register for standard blower pulleys. Our standard front face layout is
6 Bolt pattern with 2” register unless otherwise told. RPM range 10,000.
Note the attributes associated with our Balancer Part Numbers in our
catalogue including External Counterweights nominated on most Ford
balancers. The counterweight amount is also stamped directly on the
rear of the balancer inner hub.
P/N 0202SA, tells us itʼs a Chev SB steel inner and alloy outer.
P/N 0209/50, tells us itʼs an early model Ford Windsor fitted with a
late model EFI Ford crank which is 50 ounce inch imbalance
externally and not 28 ounce.inch as normal. My catalogue should inform
you directly at the P/N what style of balancer it is.
Undersize Bores:
Balancers are available with undersize crank bore to suit Eagle and
Scat aftermarket crankshafts. Just add the undersize to the part
number, for example, 0202SA-1 tells us the bore needs to be .001”
smaller than factory. Scat and Eagle cranks for some reason are always
produced with this undersize as standard. Ask your customer what
crankshaft he is using before selling a Romac balancer. You will get
caught if you donʼt.
Material used for Balancers:
Steel Inner Hubs: K1045 a medium carbon steel of around 200 Vickers.
Alloy Inner Hubs: 7075 T6 Aluminum Bar. Aircraft quality material.
Blown Inner Hubs: 4340 grade alloy steel for increased strength
required to drive superchargers.
Steel Outer Ring: Ovaka or AISI 1518 grade steel. |
